It’s all in your head (and your spine)

We started off our new regular column on caring for your body with a helpful column from Dr. Stephanie Bonn on prenatal chiropractic care. This month Carrie Abresch of Diamond Body Healing Arts demystifies Craniosacral Therapy and talks on how and why it helps mums, both pre and post natally:
For pre and post natal mums, Craniosacral Therapy (CT) helps a mum’s bones and organs find their way back “home” again. After all, where does everything shift to during pregnancy? By balancing out the odd curves in your back and neck created by pregnancy and your new kangaroo life, it’s especially relevant if you’ve had a cesarean birth because the incision and resulting scar tissue needs to be normalized. If your neck or back hurts, you have headaches, SI joint pain, or general physical fatigue, then CT can bring relief.
CT differs from most bodywork in two key ways. First, with CT there isn’t the massaging of outer tissue you would experience in a deep tissue massage. Instead, the therapist uses specific hand “holds” to provide a gentle yet deep activation and movement of the energy, or motility, within all tissues and fluids of the body. Restoring tissue motility boosts the potency of your life force energy (prana, chi, juju – whatever keeps you going!), alleviates muscle tension, restores skeletal balance, and enhances vitality.
Secondly, but most importantly, is CT’s attention to the Core Mechanical Link- CML. The CML is defined by one simple thing: a single band of connective tissue that extends from the tailbone up the spine and into the head creating a direct connection to from head to pelvis. Living within this connective tissue is the fluid that protects and nourishes your brain and nervous system, known as the cerebral spinal fluid. Because this fluid is the life force of the brain and nervous system-the “wisdom headquarters” of the body- balancing and strengthening it directly and profoundly enables the body to heal itself.
Craniosacral Therapy can provide mums with that deep relaxation and rebalancing we all need. Plus, when we are relaxed chances are our little ones are relaxed, and that makes everyone happier!
