Thanks for the momoirs

Let’s face it your initiation into parenting is a pretty big deal. And your birth story is pretty darn fascinating, at least to you, but all too many of us have probably experienced someone’s eyes glazing over as we recount all the gory details of our labor pains, crowning heads, huge incisions and football-sized hemorrhoids. But that’s not to say the story’s not worth preserving.
And so are the quaint sayings our kids come up with, their favourite activities at different ages and stages, and the interesting things they want to be when they grow up. Street sweeper anyone? But as a mum it can be hard enough to remember what happened yesterday, yet alone last month or last year. Which is where The Momoir Project comes into it.
Recognizing that our memories are a vital part of who we are as mothers and that they are unique and precious, the Momoir Project is the brainchild of award-winning, Vancouver-based writer and mum of two, Cori Howard. This intensive and personal creative writing program allows us mums to delve into our unique memories of becoming mothers and motherhood and commit them to pen and paper for posterity. Howard guides her mums through creating a “literary scrapbook” where our memories and our writing lay the foundation for a beautiful journal about motherhood and its unique meaning to us.
You don’t need to be a literary scribe to take part either. Howard, author of Between Interruptions: Thirty Women Tell the Truth About Motherhood, has taught journalism and writes for Chatelaine, the Globe and Mail, and other big name rags, and has heaps of experience under her belt to give you the tools, direction, and more importantly, the space and time to write down your thoughts, commit your memories to paper, and create a Mummy masterpiece. And even if you share it with no one other than your kids, you know they’ll love to hear about their journey into the big, wide world and their place in it!
The next session of the Momoir Project begins in May. Visit: www.themomoirproject.com for more details.
