Get crafty, not candy
We love the Easter Bunny and we love good quality chocolate (in moderation), but with Easter treats coming from aunts, uncles, and grandparents, we’re thinking the Easter Bunny may opt out of leaving candy this year. Instead, thanks to Keri from Craft Caravan, we’ve got some fun ideas for helping our kids get more crafty, instead of more candy:
Make your own basket filler: Rather than buying the plastic stuff, pull out the paper shredder, find some old utility bills, and get shredding. Leave the shred out for the Easter bunny to pile into baskets – it’s a great way to teach reusing and recycling, and the kids love helping out with the shredder (closely supervised, of course). No shredder? Do it by hand – who doesn’t find it satisfying to rip things up?
Go Green Thumb: Local, organic produce can grow right in your backyard. Get your kids started with some kid-sized gardening gloves and a packet of organic seeds – carrots are our choice because the tiny seeds inside are fun to shake. Let your little ones sprinkle them or dump them; either way, you will end up with a nice crop of carrots to munch on all summer. Plant the seeds in a container or pot if you’re short on outdoor space for a garden.
Outdoor Play: Sidewalk chalk is a spring-time staple, so stuff your Easter baskets with chalk, and add some bubble solution and bubble wands and let the creative outdoor play begin.
Make Memories Together: A mini photo album, with some labels and washable markers, is a great start to a photo album project. For tiny tots, print pictures and add to album ahead of time, then help them write and decorate the labels. For bigger kids, give the empty album and then choose pictures together. Remember to add an Easter Bunny paw print autograph to the first page.
Classic Easter: Let’s not forget the basic hard-boiled egg. Decorating kits are easy to find, and using q-tips or cotton balls to apply the die will help control the mess. A great pre-Easter craft and a perfect Easter morning breakfast!
