Denman Island Chocolate

. . .test drive chocolate in advance of Valentine’s Day that is.

Why is chocolate our favourite choice for a Valentine’s Day gift? Well, in part because dark chocolate – which contains at least 70% cocoa solids – is good for you (in moderation anyhow). It’s both a source of polyphenols, which are the same type of antioxidants found in red wine, and flavonoids, which are beneficial to your heart. And mostly because we just really like it.

We are most partial to organic chocolate. It tastes better than regular chocolate, more chocolaty and less sweet, and it promotes the biodiversity and canopy of the rain forest in part by eliminating the use of synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fungicides that conventional growers rely on.

Our two favourite organic brands available locally are Green & Black’s Organic and Denman Island Chocolate. And if you know any hot chocolate lovers big or small, you can’t go far wrong if you pick them up a jar of Green & Black’s Organic Dark Hot Chocolate. If you’re looking for other great local finds, check out Mink and Schokolade, kid-friendly chocolate hot spots that would be perfect places to visit for a special treat tomorrow.

We’ve accepted that we can’t keep our kids away from chocolate, but helping them develop a taste the organic kind, makes us slightly more resigned to it.

This wraps up our list of ideas this week for gift ideas for you and your tots for Valentine’s Day. Monday we had a list of lovely kids’ books and yesterday we had ideas for fulfilling your whole family’s paper fetish, but greenly.
