The hills are alive. . .
It’s easy to get stuck on one track and listen to the same music over and over again with your kids, which is why we like to periodically suggest some tunes to shake things up a little bit. So with the Oscars coming up this weekend our music maven is suggesting a number of soundtrack albums from years gone by that both you and your little ones may enjoy discovering (or rediscovering as the case may be). We also like it that you can pop these into the CD player and just let ‘em run.
Sound of Music
An oldie, but a goodie. “Do-Re-Me” and “My Favourite Things” are classics, and who knows, you may even be inspired to convert your old curtains into play clothes.
Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
With tracks like “I Will Survive”, “Mamma Mia” and “”Shake Your Groove Thing” there’s nothing like a little disco to pump up your kids into getting down.
The Commitments
A great way to introduce your little ones to the joys of some sweet soul music.
Grease
Ah, 1978! The year the ’50s came back in style. While some parents might hesitate over the sexually suggestive lyrics of “Greased Lightning” and “Look at me, I’m Sandra Dee”, the rest of the soundtrack is pure fun.
Mary Poppins
Yes, we’re offering up a double dose of Julie Andrews, but with a new staging on Broadway, Mary is enjoying a renaissance. Besides, there’s nothing funnier than Dick van Dyke’s appalling attempt at a Cockney accent. It’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
The Princess Bride
While this album features only one actual song, we’re suggesting it as an evening option. Mark Knopfler’s seductive guitar melodies should help both you and your children reach never-never-land a little faster.
While some of these albums are available for download on iTunes, all of them can be found on amazon.ca.
Pamela Francis, yoyomama’s music maven, is a devoted aunt of four, who makes it her mission to introduce her nieces and nephew to the wider world of music.
