Mamas Rock: Shannon Barnes
Filed Under Mamas Rock | February 15, 2008
This month for Mamas Rock we’re profiling Shannon Barnes of Flaunt Handmade Correspondences. Her card collection – which started locally and can now be found across North America and Europe – features an adorable array of fuzzy animals (as well as the odd handbag) and is all handcrafted by local women using mulberry paper, coloured fabric paint, ribbons and shiny trimmings. Kind of like your four-year-olds handmade Valentine’s Card, but with way more style.

Happy Valentine’s Day! There’s lots of love(ly) fun happening this weekend, both indoors and out. You can get in adventure mode, walk off some chocolate, get prepared, catch up on all things baby and find out more about raptor rehab.
It’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it. . .

. . .test drive chocolate in advance of Valentine’s Day that is.
Why is chocolate our favourite choice for a Valentine’s Day gift? Well, in part because dark chocolate – which contains at least 70% cocoa solids – is good for you (in moderation anyhow). It’s both a source of polyphenols, which are the same type of antioxidants found in red wine, and flavonoids, which are beneficial to your heart. And mostly because we just really like it.

We love paper. We love note cards. We love crisp, clean notebooks. And our kids love to create copious amounts of art. Each on a fresh sheet of pristine white paper. And this niggles at our eco-conscious side. But we’re not willing to sacrifice stationary style for sustainability, and thanks to Canadian company Ecojot, we don’t have to. Instead we can scribble in fine style knowing that not a single tree was sacrificed for our love of paper.

Just in case you’re behind the 8-ball like us, and haven’t stocked up for Valentine’s Day yet, this week we’ll be bringing you gift ideas for you and your tots, starting with some great kids’ books with a “love thy neighbour” message. After all, it’s never too early to introduce our egocentric little ones to the concept of thinking about others.

Let’s face it, the romance of Valentine’s Day tends to fade once you have kids. It’s more likely you’ll be eating another box of bunny pasta, than dining out at a swanky hot spot in a swish new outfit. But thanks to Indishpensable, there’s no need to sacrifice romance or good food, instead this Valentine’s [...]

When we wrote about all the great bamboo products for babes around town, lots of you let us know that you wanted to know about bamboo for you as well, and we’ve got some great finds. But first, a quick recap on what makes bamboo so great. It’s the world’s fastest growing plant, and it’s processed with little environmental damage. Turning bamboo from a plant to a fabric is ecologically friendly, requiring no chemicals.

Happy Lunar New Year! Today marks the start of the Year of Rat, and you can celebrate all weekend long. Plus we’ve got music to brighten up the dreary days of February and a heads up for getting on the go next weekend.
Soft as a baby’s…

With the fabulous weather we’ve been having of late your baby’s skin is probably drier and more irritated than usual. Since baby skin is more sensitive than ours, and nasty chemicals in children’s skincare products have recently made the news, we’re on the lookout for effective products that are safe for our little ones. And Baby Moon Botanicals’ skincare system fits the bill.

Valentine’s Day means Valentine’s crafts, and since the whole theme of the day is centred on hearts and love, it’s the perfect time for the kids to make gifts from the heart for their friends and family. We went to the expert and asked Keri Zingle, of Craft Caravan, for some ideas for loving crafts to do with our little ones.
