That lovin’ feeling
Just in case you’re behind the 8-ball like us, and haven’t stocked up for Valentine’s Day yet, this week we’ll be bringing you gift ideas for you and your tots, starting with some great kids’ books.
Ah. . .February. ‘Tis the month of love, so we thought we’d share some great books with a “love thy neighbour” message. After all, it’s never too early to introduce our egocentric little ones to the concept of thinking about others.
How Kind! written and illustrated by Mary Murphy
Babes-in-arms will love the simple oversized graphics. Older kids will enjoy the story of how one kind act from a hen sparks a chain reaction of good will and benevolence in the barnyard.
Something Else, by Kathryn Cave, illustrated by Chris Riddell
This UNESCO prize winner tells the story of Something Else, a creature who is ostracized by all the other creatures in his neighbourhood. When Something shows up on his doorstep, Something Else immediately shows him to the door. . .until he has a change of heart.
All the Colors of the Earth, written and illustrated by Sheila Hamanaka
Gorgeous oil paintings capture the many colors of skin, hair, love and laughter as myriad multi-ethnic children dance across the pages, celebrating life together.
Whoever You Are, written by Mem Fox, illustrated by Leslie Staub
With simple refrains such as “love is the same, pain is the same, smiles are the same” this book rejoices in the differences and commonalities that unite us all in our humanity.
The Golden Rule, written by Ilene Cooper, illustrated by Gabi Swiatowska
Using examples from different religions and cultures, a grandfather teaches his grandson to “treat others as you would like to be treated”. A lovely springboard for discussion, this book should be tackled by those with children five and older.
Helen Moore is yoyomama’s kiddie lit correspondent. Helen is a local children’s librarian who is currently using her maternity leave to nurture the reading skills of her two sons, ages one and three.
