Tell us what you want, what you really, really want

Since February 29th isn’t a “real” day, we’re not going to run a “real” yoyomama today. Instead we’re doing our first ever reader survey and we want to know who you are, what you think, what you like, and what you’d like to see more – or less – of on yoyomama. What’s in it for you? Well, not only more of what you like on yoyomama, but the chance to win a great gift basket packed with goodies!
What to do, what to do?

It’s another busy weekend. You can go seriously green, unleash your inner fire chief, celebrate in seussical style, be nutritious, swap gear and wrap it all up by being neighbourly. Gosh, we’re exhausted just thinking about it…
Live small, play big

Many of us in Vancouver are faced with the reality of living avec enfants in small(ish) spaces and it can be a struggle to keep those spaces both adult and kid-friendly. If you’re in that very situation and your family dines, works and plays at the same table, how do you keep it from getting sticky, glittery and battered?

Ever found that half of what you send your child off to preschool with never makes it back home again? Or that no matter how much pink you dress her in, everyone’s always asking if your still-bald little babe is a boy or a girl? Perhaps stylewise you yearn for the monogrammed heyday of yesteryear, but can’t quite pull off the look yourself? Well, we’ve got a solution to all these “issues” that’s pretty darn cute, in fact we’d even venture to say it’s Sew Cute.
Reduce, reuse. . .

There’s been a lot of bopping and singing along to Bobs & Lolo’s new DVD On Your Feet at our house of late. And when we heard our preschooler singing “R-E-C-Y-C-L-E, recycle, recycle” to herself one afternoon, we wanted to capitalize on that and start talking recycling with her. But how do you do that in ways that make sense to a three or four-year-old?

What happens when a dedicated Kindergarten teacher and VSB Early Literary Mentor and the VSB Resident Artist have a vision for what the children they teach can achieve? Well, some pretty cool art is just one offshoot of the collaboration.
Last year Heidi Clark – the teacher – and the Susan McCallum – the artist – worked together to teach Clark’s Kindergarteners how to draw in perspective, scale and three dimensional shapes, and when they saw the increase in the kids’ self confidence this wrought, they had an idea to take it one step farther.

This weekend is just packed! So we’ve listed lots of events and kept them short and sweet, but as always, we’ve included links and phone numbers so you can get more info. Frankly, we don’t how we’re going to pack Winterruption, a market, a book reading and a fair into one weekend, it’ll take a whole lot of chutzpah but we’re going to give it our best try.
What to play, what to play?

When we wrote about play last month, it was a sad but true fact that we needed some help figuring out how and what to play with our kids. So we went back to Sharon Selby, a local child counsellor, and the brains behind the Phonics Wizard, to ask for more details on the hows of play, since she’d already covered the whys.

Every month we like to profile a great online shopping locale. A place you can browse through in your PJs after the kids are abed. A place you can shop while drinking wine. A place where there are no pushy salespeople and you don’t have to worry whether or not they have a change table. This month that place is Chop, Chop, Timber, a little online-only boutique out of Edmonton.

It’s easy to get stuck on one track and listen to the same music over and over again with your kids, which is why we like to periodically suggest some tunes to shake things up a little bit. So with the Oscars coming up this weekend our music maven is suggesting a number of soundtrack albums from years gone by that both you and your little ones may enjoy discovering (or rediscovering as the case may be). We also like it that you can pop these into the CD player and just let ‘em run.
