We thought we’d missed out on all the Boxing Day sales, but we were wrong. It’s a serious sale time of year as people are clearing out the old to make way for the new. It’s also a great weekend for full on circus fun, a twist on the everyday at Science World, and some leftover holiday pantomime.

Okay, so budgets may be a little tight this month, but we’re still missing Portobello West which won’t return until late March. But fear not, if you’re jonesing for your fix of Portobello baby vendors, look no farther than Nicebaby.ca, the latest entry onto our list of online shopping haunts. Nicebaby focuses on ethical street fashion, art and toys for kids, including many Portobello vendors like Milkshaxs, Shirtseed, and Lemonade.

Since one in five children has a vision disorder, and how your child sees plays a vital role in their early development and learning, it’s important to start keeping an eye (sorry we couldn’t resist) on their vision when they’re still young. The BC Association of Optometrists’ a-b-See program offers free eye tests for three to five-year-olds, as well as a website packed with info for parents, teachers and kids.

We want Shokolade

Some people may have had their fill of chocolate by this time of year, but we feel there’s no such thing as enough (or too much) chocolate, which is why we were quick to follow a tip off from a local mama about kid-friendly Shokolade Café on East Hastings. Serving chocolates, pastries and more, all of which are made in-house with locally sourced ingredients, it’s obvious that chocolate is their passion.
