This month in mamas rock we’re profiling local mama-of-two, Nikiah Seeds, who took her background as a doula, childbirth educator, and herbalist and maternity reflexologist and created Mama Goddess Birthshop. Mama Goddess, an online store, offers midwifery supplies and gifts, pregnancy and baby needs, herbal teas, home birth kits, birth pools and more to professionals and the mums they work with. Her site is also chock-a-block with info on pregnancy and birth, breastfeeding, children’s health and healthy living.

Mama Goddess was born because Seeds wanted to create a resource for Canadian doulas to access great products that had previously only been available in the states. Initially she was running two businesses, her prenatal classes and Mama Goddess but she realized she couldn’t run two businesses well, so she decided to put all her energies behind Mama Goddess, which she enjoyed more. She’s constantly adding new products to her store, everything from books (and not just for pregnant and new mums either) to gift ideas, to menstrual products.

Seeds works from home out of a loft (that doubles as guest bedroom when her in laws visit) with shelves packed with product on all the wall space. Her youngest has just started kindergarten, and her goal has always been to grow the business as her children grow. When her daughter was in preschool, her work was limited to those hours, and she’s found that as she has more time for Mama Goddess, the more the business grows.

A self-described “birth-junkie” who loves to shop and finds people fascinating, Seeds finds that when you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life. The rewards for running her own business include having an outlet for her rampant creativity, never being bored, and being able to be home and with her kids if they need her. As she said, “There’s nothing more important than being able to take care of sick kids.”

Entrepreneurial tip:

Seeds feels firmly that home-based entrepreneurial mamas need a space they can call their own. “Make sure that if you have a home-based office that you have a separate space and a door you can close. It helps you set boundaries.”
