Kokopelli Cafe

Dunbar’s Kokopelli Cafe isn’t new on the local kid-friendly dining scene, in fact it’s practically a Dunbar tradition, but just in case you’re not already a convert, we wanted to spread the word.

The brainchild of mamas Cindy Delgado, Michele Herbert and Jessica Hotz, it’s not surprising that every aspect of Kokopelli was designed with kids (and their mamas) in mind. The front door is wide enough to accommodate strollers (even doubles), there’s a large, well-stocked, clean play area with tables nearby so you can keep an eye on your tots, and the bathroom sports both a change table and a kid-height sink.

You won’t have to suffer through mediocre adult fare just to get your fingers on kid’s food either. Their menu features light meals, home baking, smoothies and really, really good coffee as well as handy kid-sized portions of mac ‘n cheese and grilled cheese – all for under $3. Your toddlers can snack on jars of organic baby food, Baby Mum-Mums and other easy finger food, while few in the family will be able to resist Kokopelli’s Smarty Pants Cookies and Fairy Cakes.

Eating out avec enfants has never been the definition of relaxing, but during a recent weekend jaunt to Kokopelli we actually had time to stare into space and delve (ever so slightly) into the paper while our tots played happily. Now that’s what we call a break.

Note: the tables near the play area tend to jam up a bit on weekday mornings, so get there early to stake your spot, especially if you’re meeting friends.
