Family Literacy Day

BC’s Family Literacy Week is wrapping up, but there are still a few events you can catch today and Saturday. The week will be capped off by Canada’s 10th annual Family Literacy Day on Sunday the 27th. Launched to promote the importance of reading and learning as family, Family Literacy Day helps reinforce the importance of learning with children to help them build the knowledge necessary for future skills.

Family Literacy Day events are being celebrated around BC, though there aren’t any specific to Vancouver. But this isn’t a day that necessarily needs to celebrated formally. Instead celebrate by doing something as simple as setting aside extra time to read to your kids, play a game of Scrabble or follow a recipe together. Other ideas on their site include starting a family book club where you read and discuss books together (although we’re not sure how how much we’d have to say about Moo Baa La La La) and designating a family board game night.

The ABC site contains a wealth of literacy info. You’ll find games and activities for a variety of ages and an A-Z list of literacy tips and ideas. Check out the collection of recipes – which help with both literacy and numeracy skills – donated by leading chefs, cookbook authors and nutritionists, including one from Honourary Chair Robert Munsch.

A couple of surprising facts about Robert Munsch you can find on the site – his books may be short, but they take a long time to write. About five years in fact. And he was turned down by nine publishers before he was finally published. Another way to celebrate literacy? Why not surf the Family Literacy Day site with your kids looking for these and other fun facts?
