What to do, what to do?

We’re guessing you may already have a full weekend planned, even if it’s nothing more formal than stocking up on groceries, trimming the tree, doing a little eco-friendly wrapping. And since next week we’re looking back on the best of the best, we thought that for this weekend guide we’d focus on some ongoing, festive events (most of which benefit local charities) that you can enjoy whenever you have a moment. But we are starting with one glaring exception, tomorrow’s Solstice Festival:
14th Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival
Friday, December 21st, 6 pm – 10 pm, West End, Yaletown, Granville Island, Strathcona/China Town, East Side/Commercial Drive
Celebrate the longest day of the year by illuminating the night with lanterns, fire, singing, drumming, parades and dancing. Each community has its own small festival that celebrates its unique nature. For more details on each location visit: www.secretlantern.org
Christmas at Canada Place: Deck the Halls
Ongoing to January 1st, 2008, 11 am – 8 pm
Stroll along the Holiday Promenade, see the classic Woodwards Windows, meet Santa in his workshop, and send mail via the world’s largest mailbox. Don’t forget to bring non-perishable food items and new and unwrapped toys.
Capilano Suspension Bridge – Canyon Lights
Ongoing to January 5, 2008 (closed on December 25th), 5 pm – 9 pm
Over 200,000 lights brighten up the forest, including the Treetops Adventure. You’ll also find carolers, a glass blower, apple cider and festive treats.
Nature Comes To Light – A Holiday Celebration
Ongoing to December 30 (closed December 24th & 25th), 5:30 pm – 9:30 pm, The Richmond Nature Park, 11851 Westminster Highway
Nature gets all lit up with more than 150,000 lights highlighting winter animals and their antics. Keep warm with hot chocolate while you enjoy live music and performances from some of Richmond’s most popular artists.
Check our previous weekend guides for details on other ongoing events like the Peake of Christmas on Grouse Mountain, Bright Lights in Stanley Park, the Festival of Lights at VanDusen Botanical Gardens, and the Hyatt Gingerbread Lane.
