Give the gift of reading

We don’t usually do back to back books here on yoyomama, but as one of these offerings needs to be ordered in advance to make it to you in time for Christmas, we thought we’d better let you know about it sooner rather than later. And we’ve thrown in one of our all-time-favourite kid’s CDs into the mix as well. We just love finding books under the tree.

Dada’s Rock: Chris Mizzoni

Filed Under Mamas Rock | November 16, 2007

This month we’re switching gears a little, and profiling Chris Mizzoni, an entrepreneurial dad rather than a mama. We’ve been asked why yoyomama is not for dads as well, and while we never wanted to leave dads out of the equation, it’s just that yoyoparent didn’t have quite the same ring to it. . .

What to do, what to do?

We’ve got fun events this weekend and they’re followed by some serious, serious shopping. You can go to the birds, shake your groove things and get really cheesy. Or you can buckle down to some hard-core shopping to get you holiday ready.

Stormy weather

Your scouting days are far behind you, and your kid’s have yet to begin, but that’s no reason not to be prepared. November is the beginning of our local storm season, and as the past weekend attests to, it’s already upon us. Since the possibility of power outages looms high, we thought it was time to review the essentials needed to stay in fine form while the power’s out.

Toy town

Filed Under Places, Stuff | November 13, 2007

Fourth Avenue may be the place to stock up on baby gear for impending arrivals, but with the opening of the Granville Island Toy Company’s new outpost at 17th & Main this past weekend, Main between 17th and 25th Avenues is fast becoming the place to shop for kid’s toys and gifts.

Goody goody gumdrops

Filed Under Places, Stuff | November 9, 2007

We find it rather ironic that it took an Australian to realize that what Vancouver really needed was a store devoted solely to rain gear. And that’s exactly what Aussie-import Shanda Jerrett has created. Gumdrops on 4th Avenue stocks all things rain, including laptop bags, brollies, gumboots, and coats for the whole family, including the family dog.

What to do, what to do?

This isn’t just another long weekend. Lest we forget, November 11th is about honoring the sacrifices made by so many Canadians. It’s also about reflecting on what kind of world we want to leave for our children, and giving our little ones some perspective on the cost of peace. So we’ve co-opted our regular weekend guide to bring you a list of many of the Remembrance Day ceremonies happening around town.

Golly gDiapers

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | November 7, 2007

There’s something remarkably fulfilling about flushing a used diaper down the toilet. gDiapers – breathable, flushable, compostable diapers – have finally come to Canada and we rushed out to get a starter pack and test them for you. If a disposable diaper and a cloth diaper were to have a contentious relationship, gDiapers might well be their offspring.

Get crafty

Although it seems awfully early to us, the Circle Craft Christmas Craft Market is this weekend and we have to accept that holiday craft fair season is in full swing. We’ve been debating how to handle the influx of holiday shopping opportunities and decided that, rather than filling up each weekend guide with fairs, we’d devote a page to them. You can bookmark this page or we’ll update you in our daily email when we add new fairs, and they’ll always be listed with most recent first.

And the problem is…

We like to start off each month with tips and ideas from our parenting expert, Jenny Schafer of Evolved Parenting. Her monthly columns are designed to help us over common parenting hurdles. This month Jenny’s column is about problem solving with little ones, which, if done right can outline appropriate behaviour and encourage self-discipline.
