Granville Island Toy Company Logo

Fourth Avenue may be the place to stock up on baby gear for impending arrivals, but with the opening of the Granville Island Toy Company’s new outpost at 17th & Main this past weekend, Main between 17th and 25th Avenues is fast becoming the place to shop for kid’s toys and gifts.

The Granville Island Toy Company has breathed new life into an old building, sprucing it up no end and packing it with more Playmobil than you can shake a stick at. Plus they’ve got loads of other great toys you’ve come to expect from their original Granville Island store. We were smitten by Playmobil’s Advent calendars – for princesses, knights and more. They’ve got eye toward being more eco-friendly, and we can’t wait to see what they bring in as they grow. When you visit be sure to walk around back and check out their receiving door, it’s bound to increase traffic in the alley. If you’re shopping sans enfants, you may want to pop into Mukado Jewellery next door, they carry great local and international lines.

But don’t stop shopping yet:

The ’50s vibe at Lazy Susan’s extends to their collection of toys and collectibles. Great for stocking stuffers, you’ll find buckets of old-style tin toys and other treats to round off your holiday shopping.

Eugene Choo may be one of the ultimate purveyors of local independent design, but they also carry a few kids books, including one of our favourites (and it’s Canadian) – When You Were Small.

The Barefoot Contessa, known for their fabulous frocks, also boasts a cozy corner packed with nostalgic gifts and toys mainly for the baby set. We want the matching mother & daughter aprons for Christmas.

The back wall of one of Front & Company’s ever-expanding store fronts is devoted to things baby and toddler, with classic toys, clothes, shoes and stationary. You’ll know which store to haunt from their charming window.

Don’t be intimidated by the D&D stylings of Strategies’ store front. They stock lots of board games for kids of five-and-up, including Hey! That’s My Fish and The Kids of Catan, which makes the perfect under the tree companion gift for Settlers of Catan .

We love card shopping at the Regional Assembly of Text. We also love shopping for party invites for tots, wooden puzzles and blocks, and their signature Tees (in sizes two and up).
