Give the gift of reading
We don’t usually do back to back books here on yoyomama, but as one of these offerings needs to be ordered in advance to make it to you in time for Christmas, we thought we’d better let you know about it sooner rather than later. Plus, we just love finding books under the tree.
Blanket Full of Love by Kim Freeman, illustrated by Val Lawton
A unique and totally personalized gift idea, this book can be custom-ordered from Starrytime.com to include your child’s name and likeness (right down to whether their hair is curly or straight) throughout. The storyline is sentimental without being saccharine and the illustrations are lovely. With celebumums Brooke Shields and Gwyneth Paltrow as fellow customers, how can you go wrong?! To get yours in time for Christmas you need to order it by December 6th.
The 20th Century Children’s Book Treasury, selected by Janet Schulman
If your child were somehow shipped off to a desert island (and we’ve all had days where we’ve wanted that to happen) with only one book to sustain them, this would be our top choice. Packed full of classics from Goodnight Moon to Winnie-the-Pooh, this will take your child from babe-in-arms days to kindergarten and beyond.
A Family of Poems: My Favorite Poetry for Children, selected by Caroline Kennedy, paintings by Jon J. Muth
Caroline Kennedy has chosen poems ranging from adventuresome to silly, from the seashore to the stars and back again. You’ll find Shakespeare, e.e. cummings, a sprinkling of foreign poets and many others, all accompanied by Jon Muth’s exquisite paintings.
We’re straying from our usual focus on books to recommend one of the best children’s musicians around! This is music you’d actually listen sans enfants – it’s that good. All four of Elizabeth Mitchell’s CDs are excellent, but if you’re looking for a seasonal theme, try You Are My Flower for its rocking Jingle Bells rendition. Seriously, we can’t rave enough about Elizabeth Mitchell’s music.
Helen Moore is yoyomama’s kiddie lit correspondent. Helen is a local children’s librarian who is currently using her maternity leave to nurture the reading skills of her two sons, ages one and three.
