Golly gDiapers
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | November 7, 2007
Yesterday’s yoyo was a no go due to technical difficulties, our apologies. And now back to our regular programming:
There’s something remarkably fulfilling about flushing a used diaper down the toilet. gDiapers – breathable, flushable, compostable diapers – have finally come to Canada and we rushed out to get a starter pack and test them for you.
If a disposable diaper and a cloth diaper were to have a contentious relationship, gDiapers might well be their offspring. They combine a diaper cover (or ‘little g’ pants), with snap-in liner and a flushable insert. You smooth the insert into the liner, snap it into the ‘little g’ pants, close the Velcro tabs at the back so your dexterous tot can’t get out, and you’re good to go.
To dispose of the used insert, tear it apart to separate the absorbent inner core from the outer material (this is key, because if you don’t read the instructions and pop it all in the pot like we did the first time, it swells up and requires some major plunger action to clean things up), and toss the inner and outer parts into the toilet, stir and flush. And if your toilet’s not up to the task, you can compost wet diapers and toss dirty ones, they’re plastic-free and organic and break down quickly.
The first time we tore ours apart we were a little icked out, but once we got the hang of it we were all set. We’ve yet to make it through a dry night with them, but we did just find a handy nighttime tip on their website that we’ll be trying out. Their site is full of helpful info, details, and even videos. They encourage you to call their FLUSH phone line and a fan started a Yahoo group you can join to bond with other g mamas.
Why gDiapers? Well, you get the environmental benefits of cloth without all the washing and the convenience of disposables without all the landfill. Whether you use them when you’re out and about to compliment your cloth diapers, or opt for them rather than disposables, they’re an intriguing
addition to the diaper oeuvre. We just wish they’d made it here before the strike.
New to Canada, the only place you can buy them nationally is Whole Foods in West Van. A starter kit, which includes two pairs of ‘little g’ pants, 4 snap-in liners,10 flushable refills and a stir stick for your toilet is $27.99, and a package of 32 to 40 flushable refills (depending on your baby’s size) is $19.99.

Let us know what you think or share your great finds with us so we can share them with other Vancouver mothers!

Thanks for the piece on the gdiapers, that’s great info.
I just wanted to let you and your readers know that they are also available at Choices Market (at least the one on 16th has them).
I’ve been using gdiapers for over a year and love them. We had to order them from the States and so, I am very happy to finally be able to get them here now. I think they are fantastic and such a great company to support. I have had many a conversation with the company founder and have done as much word-of-mouth advertising as possible.
The only potential hitch is if you discover you have a tree root in your sewage line thus causing a MAJOR back-up! This happened to us after happily flushing for two weeks and it turned out the tree root is in the city line so there is nothing we can do about it. So, we flush the fill and chuck the rest and I still think they are great. I also think the covers are excellent for cloth diapers. I have the cotton/hemp tri-fold diaper that I use in them as well and the covers are better than I had previously tried.
To top if off, the covers are so cute on little bums and come in such great colours. My girls are both only in them at night (and both insist on pink ones) and only very occasionally do they wake up wet-through.
I feel like I am an unofficial spokesperson for them and would happily answer anyone’s questions about. I also have two medium-sized covers that are too small for my girls so if anybody would like to try them out without a big commitment, I can pass these along.

I love that Google is placing ads for ‘adult diapers’ on your front page!
I found gdiapers at both Capers on West 4th and Absolutely Diapers/KG Kids on West 10th. They were on sale until Jan 1 at Capers so this is unfortunately now too late for everyone to stock up!!
I am so happy to hear that the word is spreading about gDiapers! We have been using them for my son, who is 11 months old, since he was 3 months old. We love them!
We were fortunate enough to have them during the garbage strike and it made a HUGE difference in the amount of garbage we made. I think it’s important for people to realize that disposable diapers can take up to 500 years to break down in a landfill! That is why we chose gDiapers. There is less environmental impact AND…they look so darn cute!
They are not as gross to use as they sound…the whole swishing in the toilet thing. I am not sure if it’s the same with girls, but when my son pees it only wets the front of the liner, and so when I pull it out to flush I don’t have to touch any pee.
If you are on Facebook, I have a group “I Love gDiapers”. Join up and share any info you have!
I’m just wondering if anywhere in Vancouver sells the extra ‘little g’ pants…?

I am looking for any Canadian websites that are selling gDiapers. Right now ordering from the states seems pretty expensive for shipping and then border fees.
Hi Lindsay…I would gladly take your gdiapers off your hands to give them a try with my little one!!! If you still have them! I use Baby Kangas cloth diapers with hemp inserts but we go up to our cabin in the summer and don’t have a washing machine…so I was wondering what to do when we are there. These would work perfectly as we are very eco-friendly at the cabin and I was glad to hear that they compost. Where can I buy them. I live out in Langley and have not seen them in Canada. Does Choices in South Surrey carry them??? If anyone could tell me that would be great my email is monkeejessons@yahoo.ca..and my name is Naomi! Thanks everyone.

I am just about to try the g diapers, looking forward to it (only a mother could say that). They are also available at London Drugs (online and instore).
Hi – I’m also looking to buy extra liners and cloth gdiapers (preferably in some other colours besides the starter pack ones). Anyone know where in Metro Vancouver they can be found? Shipping costs from the U.S.A is over $40!
London Drugs is now carrying the g’Pants! Loving g-Diapers for over a year now and delighted to see they are getting more and more widely available in Canada
For those of you who have access to travel to the states, Fred Meyers sells the g diapers for about the same price as we do here in Canada at London Drugs and Choices. But the liners are cheaper in Fred Meyers in the states. Apparently some of the Superstores are supposed to carry the g diapers as well. And always check out on Craigslist because you can quite often find people who are selling them. That’s where I am buying my diapers because it is a lot cheaper for the diapers than at London Drugs, I guess you have to be ok with getting the used diapers but I’d rather run a load in the wash than spend the money for brand new ones in store. Hopefully that helps :)
Hi All :)
I love the idea of G Diapers! But I live on Vancouver Island in Victoria and wonder if anyone has found a place on the island that sells them?!?!
Thanks!
I have been using gdiapers on my 1-yr old daughter for 10.5 month and love them (I didn’t know about them from the very beginning)… :)
If you are considering a cloth type option, gives these a try! They are incredibly versatile, as you can use the flushable liners they sell or you can use cloth inside (which they also sell now on their website- or you can use whatever you want!!)
I use both and it’s great!!
I am a mom who used disposables on my 1st 2 kids and am so glad to have gdiapers now!! I wish I could go back and use g’s on all of them. :)
right now Gdiapers.com is running a great promo package.
“everyday g’s”
gets you 6 cloth diapers for $40 bucks!
they advertise right now for $70 bucks but you just need a redemption code to get the discount.
gmums got one by email and anyone can use it (another reason why the gdiapers company is awesome!!)
here’s my code:
g1128Walcott
try them, you won’t regret it!
FYI for anyone interested in the potential environmental impacts of flushing the g diaper inserts – take a look at the report on the effects of g diapers in Vancouver, WA’s city sewers. Interesting stuff… gdiapers are not exactly flushable and not exactly sustainable.

I have found the gDiaper at various “organic” shops…but the best yet was to see them at London Drugs!!!!…
Hi yoyomamas, you can also buy gDiapers online at Well.ca – free shipping in Canada :) We love Canadian moms and we hope you love us too.
