If you’ve been on our list for any length of time now you know we’re big fans of books. We figure they’re gifts that keep on giving. But what about teaching your little one early literacy skills to give them a good foundation for when the time comes for them to learn their reading, writing and ‘rithmatic? Okay, maybe not math, but definitely reading and writing.

It’s been the year of toy recalls (we know, you’ve heard it here before) and often lead paint is the culprit. So when we heard that the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, a US consumer organization that publishes an independent review of toys and children’s media, was independently testing toys to confirm they’re free of both surface and embedded lead we had to check them out.

Grocery shopping with tots can be a trial, especially when they’re old enough to pilfer the candy rack at the check out, or have a tantrum when they can’t have Dora cookies rather than the wholesome ones you’ve chosen. Add to that travel time and fruitless trawling the aisles for that one elusive item and it certainly isn’t the most fun one has each week.

Local mamas spotting a gap in the market and deciding to fill it is one reason why there are so many great finds around town. The newest entry onto our list of handy online shopping destinations started just that way. West Van mum Shannon Augustus noticed Lotte Noldus Veng’s children at preschool because of their unique clothes. New to Canada from Denmark, Noldus Veng’s kids were kitted out in togs that couldn’t be found in Canada. Though neither had a background in fashion, Augustus and Noldus Veng teamed up to create trendytot.ca, introducing Scandinavian style to Vancouver.

Today is National Child Day, which marks the day Canada adopted the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
