True confections

We’re capping off our party week with the ultimate confection. Because if parties aren’t the perfect time for a little frivolity then when is?
In our eyes Redfish Kid’s Party Dress is a true party splurge, after all it costs $63.90. But then when you figure that it’s machine washable and dryable, and made from 100% preshrunk cotton, so it can be worn for everyday and not just saved for special, the cost per wearing goes down. And we have it on good authority that there’s more than one little girl out there who wears hers at least two or three times a week.
Redfish Kids Clothing, from local designer and mum Lorraine Kitsos, tap into the children’s courageous natures. They’re locally made and sweat-shop free and they’re both easy care and easy wear. They also tap into a mum’s reality. Built for versatility, the pants work as shorts, swing dresses become smocks, and the Party Dress (aptly named by designer Kitsos’ two-year-old daughter) looks great over a pair of jeans. If you can get your little princess into pants that is.
And if you’re still looking for a reason to cave in and splurge, this month Redfish Kids will be donating 30% of all online sales to Rethink Breast Cancer.
If you’d prefer confections of a smaller, sweeter kind, you’ll want to check out the new Butter Baked Goods on Dunbar Street. Decorated with lots of old-fashioned whimsy and roses, there’s a mouth-watering array of cupcakes to choose from. Another tantalizing case brimming with cookies and bars is kid-accessible thanks to a bench little ones can stand on to better admire the bounty on display. Smeary, sticky hand prints on the glass are accepted as the price of business. We think the doggie hitching post out front is a nice touch too.

There’s been another recall, but this time it’s cough and cold medicine for children under two. For full details on what products to avoid visit the CBC News site.
In the very beginning we promised you we wouldn’t let you miss community centre registration ever again. So in the wake of the end of some of the strike we’ve been calling around for details. Drop in programs will be resuming this week, while registration for fall programs will be happening in the next week or two. Your best bet is to call your local community centre as they’ll all be gearing up at different times.
