Mamas rock: Lisa Will

Filed Under Mamas Rock, Stuff | October 17, 2007

This month’s entrepreneurial mama is Lisa Will, co-founder of locally-based Stonz. Known for their cozy booties which keep little one’s toes toasty warm while out and about, Stonz was born in 2004. Outdoor-oriented Will and her business partner Tracey Von Dehn bonded on a trip to Whistler over their mutual inability to find warm footwear that stayed on their kids’ feet while in the stroller, front carrier, backpack, bike trailer and ski trailer. Von Dehn had made some fleece booties to combat the problem, Will loved them, and the two stood in the village square for hours planning their company – it would specialize in creative innovate quality kid’s gear that was both functional and stylish.

Coffee talk

yoyomama keeps you connected to your community virtually, but what about when you long for some real-life adult interaction? Sometimes you really need to talk with other mothers who are facing the same issues as you are. Little life changing things like when is the right time to go back to work after having kids? How do you balance work and family time? How do you go about starting your own business? This is where momcafé comes in.

Fresh really is best

We first discovered Fresh Is Best tortilla chips and salsa at the Kamloops Farmer’s Market. Then we discovered the Fresh is Best store in Kamloops, which carries the full range of their products. A year or two after that we started seeing their products popping up in grocery stores around Vancouver including IGA, Save on Foods and Capers. And now? Vancouver’s very own Fresh is Best store opened on Broadway last week. Why are we so excited? Well, once you’ve tried Fresh is Best’s Tortilla Chips you’ll never go back to any others, truly.

True confections

We’re capping off our party week with the ultimate confection. Because if parties aren’t the perfect time for a little frivolity then when is? In our eyes Redfish Kid’s Party Dress is a true party splurge, after all it costs $63.90. But then when you figure that it’s machine washable and dryable, and made from 100% preshrunk cotton, so it can be worn for everyday and not just saved for special, the cost per wearing goes down.

What to do, what to do?

Whether you’re indoors or out, we’ve got a few weekend long events to keep you busy. You can light up the night for a good cause, try over 60 varieties of apples, or play house at the home show. Fingers crossed for fine weather.

Next in our series of virtual shopping destinations is Honeybunch, an online-only store based in Toronto offering all sorts of fun party finds. Why online shopping? Well, much as we love reality shopping, it’s not always possible with tots in tow, and online shops are accessible during the hours that are convenient for you, naptimes, night time…

Party hearty

This week we’ve decided to make it birthday party time here at yoyomama. We’ve been doing some party planning ourselves and realized we needed some help, so we thought you might too. The strike may end this week (finger’s crossed) but just in case it keeps dragging on we’ve complied a list of venues that are currently open and that offer parties for the five and under set. Whether you’ve got a little pirate on your hands, a budding chef or an animal lover, there’s bound to be something on this list that they’ll find appealing.

Try it, you’ll like it…

Remember Mikey from the ’70s TV ad involving three boys and a box of cereal? The aim was to convince Mikey (and us) to try something new, and we here at yoyomama feel it’s our duty to perform the same sort of community service. Only this time it relates to the audible, not the edible.

What to do, what to do?

Since it’s a long weekend we thought that the extra time gave us the opportunity to play both locally and a little bit farther afield, and all in the name of giving thanks. You can eat locally at the Trout Lake Farmer’s Market, trot off some turkey, go overboard on cranberries, or celebrate the harvest.

Blooming a la card

Your first pregnancy is pretty much all about you. It’s about coming home and putting your feet up because you’re tired. It’s about waiting impatiently to be big enough to fit into your funky maternity jeans. It’s about getting the office coffee machine moved because its right outside your office door and the smell makes you sick – okay, maybe that was just us, but either way, it’s a pretty exciting journey.
