Word on the Street

You may have noticed that we’re big on reading at yoyomama, which is why we felt that one of our favourite family-friendly literary events deserved a cameo appearance rather than sharing a smaller spot in our weekend guide.

Word on the Street
, Vancouver’s celebration of reading, happens this Sunday, September 30 from 11 am – 6 pm. Due to our interminable civic strike, they’ve had to move the festivities this year. Rather than Library Square, everything will be happening in the outdoor spaces outside of Canada Post and The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts and, as usual, on Homer and Hamilton Streets between Robson and Georgia.

There’s a whole tent full of authors and performers just for kids. We think the Renaissance Puppetry Troupe’s “Froggy Finds a Fool” sounds like fun, as does the Tickle Trunk Players’ “Jeffrey and Sloth” and Anne Glover’s intruiging sounding combination of stories and string.

Most of the shows in the Kids Tent are for kids aged four and up, while the Vancouver Sun Raise-a-Reader Corner, is aimed at the youngest members of your family. They’re planning storytelling by Lower Mainland librarians (in case, like us, you’ve been suffering from a dearth of story time with Vancouver libraries closed). Poet and author Robert Heidbreder’s “Lickety-Split” event is designed to get everyone going.

Older kids may also find the annual Book Bag Treasure Hunt fun. Each year they sell 250 “self-filling” WOTS book bags for $18. With bag in hand, you can collect free merchandise at selected exhibitors. Who knows what literary treasures you’ll tote home?

We’ve barely scratched the surface of what you’ll find on the street on Sunday. You can view the program online, or pick up a free program at your local Starbucks and participating bookstores, and there’ll also be a full schedule in the Vancouver Sun on Saturday the 29th.
