Southlands Fair

It’s definitely harvest time, and we’ve got lots of events this weekend that celebrate nature in all its forms. All this in addition to Word on the Street, a great sale, and we’ll be live at Portobello West, so if you’re there be sure to drop by and say hello.

The Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge
Saturday, September 29th, 10 am – 12 pm, various locations
If you’re nursing, you can help set the new record for the most babies breastfeeding at one time. The challenge celebrates breastfeeding and promotes its many health benefits for women and their families. There are four different locations around Vancouver where you can participate and in addition to a whole lot of nursing, there’ll be fun stuff for kids, door prizes, music and entertainment, goodies and the tooth fairy will be popping by. Latch-on is promptly at 11 at the following locations – Oakridge Mall Auditorium (650 West 41st Ave), BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre (4500 Oak St), St Paul’s Hospital (1081 Burrard St), and the Wise Hall (1882 Adanac St).

Harvest Festival at the West End Farmer’s Market at Nelson Park
Saturday, September 29th, 9 am – 2 pm, Comox Street between Bute and Thurlow
Our local farmer’s markets are still on the go, and they’re brimming with harvest goodies like squash, apples and tomatoes, yummy baking and crafty goods. So if you’ve been meaning to check one out now’s definitely the time.

Southlands Country Fair
Sunday, September 30th, 10 am – 5 pm, Southlands Riding Club, 7025 Macdonald Street
Come rain or shine you can enjoy a traditional country fair without leaving the city. There’ll be pony rides, a petting farm, old fashioned fun, hay rides, a vendor’s market, thrift and book sales, live music and more. Entry is by donation and partial profits go to supporting the Southlands Country Fair Summer Riding Program which gives disadvantaged kids the chance to learn about riding and horses up close and personal.

False Creek Watershed Society’s Salmon Celebration

Sunday, September 30th, Noon – 4 pm, Vanier Park
In the true spirit of BC Rivers Days you can honour the spirit of the salmon who traditionally lived in the streams that fed into Eastern False Creek. There’ll be a parade, crafts workshops, live entertainment, food (salmon burgers we hope!), storytelling, wooden boat building and more. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about watershed stewardship and urban sustainability. For more BC Rivers Day events visit their website: www.riversday.bcit.ca

There’s been yet another toy recall. This time they’re recalling more Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway Toys, Britain’s “Knights of the Sword” Series Toys, Happy Giddy Gardening Tools and Children’s Sunny Patch Chairs, Floor Puppet Theaters, Children’s Spinning Wheel-Metal Necklaces, TOBY & ME Jewelry Sets and a Children’s Toy Rake. And in many of the cases lead paint is again the culprit. For full product and recall details visit: www.toy-testing.org/CTTCmm.htm

All this makes our info on today’s Natural Pod event especially timely. From noon – 3 pm today in North Van you can shop Natural Pod’s safe, non-toxic, natural toys in person instead of online. They’ll have toys, dolls, games and more for babies on up. The sale will be at the Vancouver Waldorf Schook, 2725 St. Christophers Road, North Vancouver.
