Slumming it
Frankly the whole Yummy Mummy thing stresses us out. Being yummy on top of keeping everyone clean, properly fed, and appropriately stimulated (and all the minutiae that entails) seems like a tall order. Not that we don’t have our moments, of course, but since every time we show cleavage some little person possessively jams their sticky fingers down it, those moments are generally confined to date night. Which is why we found Fiona Neill’s The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy so refreshing.
Turn on, press play, and forget about it. . .

Until now our music column has brought you adult songs with kid appeal (and a PG rating), but we’re keenly aware that for parents free time is typically an oxymoron. When you do have a few spare moments you may not want to spend it mixing and burning your own CDs, so today we’re delivering a list of entire albums that you can just drop into the CD player, press play and not worry about. And yeah, you may still have to download the albums, but it’s less time consuming than mixing and matching.
What to do, what to do?

There’s lots to enjoy this weekend, including Capers Living Naturally Fair, the opening of the new museum shop at the Museum of Anthropology, the 27th Annual Terry Fox Run, and a birthday party at Old Fire Hall No. 2. We figure that’s pretty much something for everyone. . .

Most of us are pretty well versed in the basics of car seat safety. Start off with a rear-facing seat until your child is at least one-year-old and 9 kg (20 lbs). Then switch to a forward-facing seat, but the longer the seat can safely stay rear-facing the better. And all forward-facing car seats must be secured with a tether. But once your child is four-years-old and over 18 kg (40 lbs) they’re ready for the next step, a booster seat.

The Dashefsky family has just bought their e-children business to Vancouver. One stylin’ birthday

Now that we have kids we find online shopping can be a lot easier than reality shopping. Sure, nothing beats seeing and touching and trying what you’re buying, but it’s rarely fun trying to shop with tots in tow. We’re intimately acquainted with a toddler whose driving goal in life is to find the back exit of a store in hopes that it offers an escape route. Another little Houdini we know has an unerring sense of where the stock room of any store is. Yet another screaming tyke trapped his mother in the changing room at the Gap for an hour while he threw a tantrum. And that’s why we’re starting to regularly feature virtual shopping meccas.
Cloth diapering — an easy recipe

Last month our article comparing two types of “greener” disposable diapers stirred up ongoing debate. We wanted to give cloth diapers equal airtime, so in response, Madeleine Shaw, co-founder of Lunapads, has passed along her own real life cloth diapering recipe. She hopes it will be an inspiring starting point for those of you who have been considering cloth but aren’t quite sure how to get started.
Make mine mink

As mums we tend to read about hot new spots and think fondly back to the days when we patronized such establishments. Well, imagine our glee when we found out that the newest must-visit chocolate shop we keep reading about is child-friendly. Mink Chocolates, at the base of the Terminal City Building, has an amazing [...]

We love fall, it really does seem like the new year to us, and in keeping with the unofficial new year there are lots of new events to keep us busy this weekend. And, for once, the weather’s supposed to be fine. You can celebrate downtown’s diversity, be super duper safe, get milk and go fishing.
Keep it up

It’s time again for tips from our parenting expert, Jenny Schafer of Evolved Parenting, whose monthly columns are designed to help us over some common parenting hurdles. We know we’re supposed to praise our kids for things they do right, rather than focusing on the negative, but continually saying “great job” and “well done” can get monotonous, so we’ve turned to Jenny for some ideas.
