Kick the habit

method tote

We all know that plastic’s not fantastic, and ubiquitous plastic bags are especially culpable. But until you get into the habit, it can be hard to remember to bring a reusable tote with you when you’re doing errands. That’s why we love method’s new Plastic Bag Rehab reusable market tote that they’ve created in tandem with green lifestyle personality Danny Seo. It’s eye catching enough to remind us to bring it along, it’s funky and fun, and it folds up nice and small so it’s eminently stashable in your glove box, your diaper bag or your purse.

The front is emblazoned with a funky “plastic bag rehab” graphic while the back expounds 16 ways to “feel better” and “look good” while using the bag. We were particularly drawn to #11 – The ideal wine bag for a magnum of Chianti, #7 – A bottomless carryall for emotional baggage, and #13 – Diaper duty calls. Be ready with wipes, diapers and a favourite toy. Made of rip stop nylon, with a zippered pouch inside, we suspect it’s actually sturdy enough to hold that magnum of wine, though we’d probably opt for a nice Shiraz ourselves.

The catch? They’re not actually for sale. But between October 1st and December 31st, when you buy $25 worth of method products you can mail or fax them your proof of purchase and they’ll mail you a bag. Visit givegreener.com for details. Luckily we’re fans of method’s green cleaning products and regularly use their liquid hand soaps and laundry detergent, so stocking up won’t be a hardship, and we can carry it all home in our reusable tote. . .

In the week we’ve had our bag we’ve used it as a diaper bag, stuffed it full of harvest bounty at the farmer’s market, and taken it to the grocery store. Because no matter how lovely your reusable bag is, if you don’t reuse it then what’s the point?

yoyomama will be on hand at this Sunday’s Portobello West. If you’re there we’d love to meet you in person. We’ll have small treats from Mink on hand, and we’ll also be giving away a great gift basket full of goodies from Mimic Baby, Random House, Phonics Wizard, Bug & Pickle, New & Green and more!

How do I love Method? Let me count the ways….

    - they are non-toxic
    - they clean really well
    - they smell really nice and don’t trigger my asthma
    - they are priced decently
    - they are readily available in supermarkets and drugstores, so I don’t have to trek to a specialty store for them
    - they want to give me a free plastic bag

    I’m in love.

I am trying to find out where I can purchase the “plastic bag rehab” bags. Anyone have a clue?

Hi Nancy – unfortunately they’re not actually for sale. They were only available between October 1st and December 31st, when you bought $25 worth of method products. You can always check the method site and see if they have any spares…
