Kick the habit

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | September 28, 2007

We all know that plastic’s not fantastic, and ubiquitous plastic bags are especially culpable. But until you get into the habit, it can be hard to remember to bring a reusable tote with you when you’re doing errands. That’s why we love method’s new Plastic Bag Rehab reusable market tote that they’ve created in tandem [...]

You may have noticed that we’re big on reading at yoyomama, which is why we felt that one of our favourite family-friendly literary events deserved to rest on its own laurels rather than sharing a smaller spot in our weekend guide. Word on the Street, Vancouver’s celebration of reading, happens this Sunday, September 30 from 11 am – 6 pm.

We suspect that you, like us, find few things as satisfying as getting great deals on good stuff. So when we found a cluster of sales all coming up fast, we had to share. There’s a warehouse sale from Style Kid, and a sale to end all sales brought to you by Dirty Laundry, Fig Kids, Trendy Tot and Mimic Baby.

Mamas rock: Shelley Franchini

Filed Under Mamas Rock | September 21, 2007

This month in Mamas Rock we’re profiling local entrepreneurial mama Shelley Franchini, aka The Stage Mother. Rather than a Teri Shields or Dina Lohan, Franchini is a home stager. She comes in and decorates your house to show it off to its best advantage. The goal? To sell your house fast and hopefully for [...]

We have your Saturday all planned out for you, but we have to warn you, you’ll be exhausted (and satisfied and well-rounded) at the end of it all. Start at a great sidewalk sale, then celebrate all things bike, and end up being a little moonstruck.

Room for two (or more)

When you already have a tot, welcoming a new baby into the family requires skillful negotiations, cunning and planning. Reading books about youngsters and their new siblings is a great springboard for discussing feelings and thoughts about becoming a big brother or sister. We’ve read about breastfed babes, bottlefed babes, hospital settings, home settings, jealous siblings, jealous pets, and everything in between. But since we’d rather not introduce ideas about jealousy until it becomes an issue, we’ve chosen more general books.

It’s a little world after all

Until recently, mums in the Hastings Sunrise neighborhood have had to go West to stock up on local lines like Peekaboo Beans, Fig Kids, Joey Tote slings and Babylicious. But the opening of Little Earth in the 2600 block of East Hastings (right next to Pomegranate Community Midwives) this past July has changed all that. Eco-friendly Little Earth supports local and Canadian designers, has a selection of organic clothes, carries wooden toys, and offers a 50/50 split between new and consignment stock.
