What to do, what to do?

Here’s a selection of just some of what’s happening around town this weekend:
Solar Power Roadshow – Bubble Beards
Saturday, August 18th, 11 am – 3 pm, Kids Market at Granville Island
The Solar Power Roadshow has been touring around town this summer, and this weekend it touches down at the Kids Market. Grow a “Bubble Beard” and get stung by a solar-charged Tesla device, all while learning about renewable energy and solar power.
Huge Kids’ Toy & Clothing Sale
Saturday, August 18th, 9 am – 1 pm, Cloverdale Fairgrounds, 60th Avenue & 176 Street, Surrey
We must admit, we’ve yet to attend this monthly event, but friends have tales of great finds, while others have offloaded used gear for profit. Call to book a table, they go fast: 604.588.9919, or carpool out there for some power shopping.
Latin Summer Fest
Sunday, August 19th, noon – 6 pm, Trout Lake
Start your day with a parade, then sample food and browse the market, enjoy back to back entertainment on the stage – everything from live Flamenco to Afro Pop and play in the kids’ activity area.
The Fair at the PNE
August 19 – September 3rd
It’s back with old favourites like the Superdogs who entertain with canine stunts (1:30 pm, 5:00 pm & 7:30 pm daily), the Toontastic Celebration Parade which is chock-a-block with cartoon favourites including Curious George, Thomas the Tank Engine, and the Cat in the Hat (3 pm & 9 pm daily), KC Bear’s Street Party with all the Toontastic characters ready to meet and greet your tots (5: 15 pm daily), and even more rides at the Kids Playce while the fair’s on, and that’s only scratching the surface. . .
New today on our list of things to do around town that aren’t affected by the strike:
We have to admit, as the strike drags on, we sometimes regret our (rash?) promise to come up with new ideas every day for things to do around town, but we’ll keep trying. Today’s event is more something to look forward to than something to while away the last days of summer – Rock.It Boy Entertainment is presenting a live show featuring Max & Ruby (originally from Rosemary Wells’ books, now seen on Treehouse Television) at three different locations in October – October 18th at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver, October 20th at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey, and October 21st at the Abbey Arts Centre in Abbotsford. Tickets from Ticketmaster.
And speaking of October, one enterprising mama we know has her kids fully involved in planning their Hallowe’en costumes. As she said, she has the time now. . .

With the strike dragging on, I’ve decided to get the kids involved in the recycling business so as to reduce the blue bin clutter on the back porch. We usually leave our cans & bottles in the blue bin for enterprising alley trollers to take, but decided that this would be a great opportunity for the kids to get involved, make money and then reward themselves: once a week, we’ve been gathering all the empty cans & bottles and returning them. My kids love receiving the change from the cashier, and then, as a special treat, we get something from either the bakery or the dollar store.
