Snack attack

healthy snack

Well, our back to Preschool week may be over, but there’s still more to say, and today we wanted to talk packing healthy snacks for school.

First a few more great tips from Daljit – the main thing is to know your child. If you’ve got a slow eater on your hands, give them one snack, not a large selection. Some kids eat complicated food, some kids don’t. To help your child feel successful, especially with their dietary habits, give them amounts you know they can finish. And pick snacks you know they like so they won’t be eyeing their neighbour’s food. Check your school’s sharing policy – do they encourage kids to share, or stick with their own snacks?

When you’re thinking snacks think easy food, finger food, food that can be eaten quickly and easily manipulated by your child without help. Healthy ideas include grapes cut in half, cheese & crackers, homemade muffins, finger sandwiches, apple slices & cheese or peanut butter, celery sticks filled with cream cheese, tahini or nut butter, and quesadillas. If it’s possible avoid trans-fats and opt for whole grains and organic fruits and veggies. Check out our info on preschool and allergies, as allergies can affect your snacking options, especially if you’ve got an avid peanut butter lover.

This week Capers is also a font of inspired lunch box suggestions with their “Lunch Kits WOW!” kid-friendly tasting sessions on August 30th (at Capers on Cambie) and August 31st (at Capers in West Van).

And a great way to make the transition to preschool easier for your child is to take them out shopping for a special snack bag or backpack to carry all their treats and treasures with them on their daily commute.

starNew today on our list of things to do around town that aren’t affected by the strike:

We have to admit that when we promised to bring you new ideas daily for things to do while the strike’s on, we didn’t expect it to last quite so long. And with no end in sight, we’re running out of ideas so we’ll finish off this week with daily updates and then hope we’ve got enough on our list to keep you busy this fall (and if we come up with anything extra special, of course we’ll add it to your daily yoyomama email).

If you’re exploring downtown don’t forget to keep your eyes open for the Downtown Street Beats Summer Busker Series. Shows rotate between TD Square and London Drugs (corners of Granville and West Georgia), outside Tip Top Tailors (Granville at West Pender), the Vancouver Art Gallery (Robson Street side), Granville Square (foot of Granville Street at West Cordova) and the park at Hornby & Hastings.
