Back to (pre) school
This week at yoyomama we have heaps of how-tos for getting your little one ready to go (back to) preschool. We’re starting the week with a bit more info than usual, as we’ve got a big picture overview of what to do to get into the ‘academic’ groove. With our little ones just beginning preschool themselves, we figured we needed help, so we interviewed early childhood development advocate and counsellor, Daljit Gill-Badesha, mother of a 4-year-old boy and a 21-month-old girl, to find out how to make the transition to school successful for everyone.
You say toe-may-toe

We haven’t actually eaten at the newly relocated Tomato Fresh Food Café yet (well, we have actually, but not with our kids), but there are a couple of reason we know it’s a good place to dine avec les enfants. The new setting has high ceilings, polished floors, lots of light and lots of room. Which means you’re not dining cheek by jowl with your neighbor, and nor are your kids.
What to do, what to do?

You can go solar this weekend, go shopping (but bring your gameface, you’ll need to be ready to rumble), groove to the latin beat, or ride yourself (and your kids) silly. It’s Vancouver, it’s summer, and there’s always something for everyone. . .
Mamas rock: Lori Joy Smith
Filed Under Mamas Rock, Stuff | August 15, 2007
This month we’re profiling local entrepreneurial mama artist Lori Joy Smith, whose career as an illustrator and greeting card designer took a turn towards customized painting and fabric pieces when she had her daughter Sophie, who’s now two-and-a-half. Her illustrations have been licensed for everything from bookmarks and greeting cards to baby shoes for Jack & Lily.
The great diaper debate
Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | August 14, 2007
The debate between which type of diaper causes less ecological impact – cloth or disposable – rages on. And while cloth seems to be edging out disposables, we’re too far into our disposable diapering career to make switching to cloth viable either financially or ecologically, so we decided to test some greener disposable diaper options.
Cupcake confidential

Becoming a mum has probably brought out hitherto unexpected interest in (whether by virtue of necessity or actually liking it) cupcakes, but for those of us unschooled in the domestic arts, decorating those little suckers can be an exercise in frustration or just plain old messy. Which was why when we discovered the T Room on 10th Avenue, a new tea shop that has a mouth-watering supply of kitchenware – baking accoutrements in particular – we were inspired.
Little Joe

We’ve dubbed the week of August 20th, “Back to Pre-School Week” here at yoyomama, and it’ll be chock-a-block with tips and ideas for getting your little one ready for the transition to pre-school or kindergarten. But we couldn’t sit on this until then. This month, Joe Fresh Style, which sells men and womens’ wear at Superstore, is introducing their inaugural children’s collection, Joe Fresh Style Kids.
What to do, what to do?

This Sunday is United Nations Youth Day, which focuses on practical action to encourage youth to participate in the decisions and processes that affect their lives. There’s nothing specific happening in Vancouver, but we figure at the very least you can get your youth’s input before you decide how to spend your weekend. And there’s lots of choices, everything from Kid’s Day at the Market, to a summer block party to a few colourful festivals.
Back to eating basics
Filed Under Stuff, Tips & Tricks | August 8, 2007
We’re still plowing our way through Marion Nestle’s tome, What to Eat, which is all about making sensible food choices. Nestle, who you may have seen in Super Size Me, takes you on a guided tour of the supermarket while giving you the real skinny on wild and farm-raised; organic, natural and conventional; omega-3s, and trans-fats; pesticides and the environment; portion size, labeling, and nutrition claims; food safety and more.
Baby boon
We’re a big fan of Boon products, they’re innovative, they’re creative and they’re obviously designed by someone who knows what life with kids is really like. Which is why we wish we were in the market for a highchair – because their Flair Chair is finally available in Canada. The design is reminiscent of chairs in a hair salon, right down to the pneumatic lift for easy height adjustment (how many hours of by yourself enjoyment will that provide for your hubby and your toddler?).
