Music for the Masses (The ’80s)
We’ve brought you kid-appropriate adult music from the ’60s and the ’70s, and now we’re revisiting the 1980s and some guilty pleasures from a decade most of us remember well.
Frequently the butt of jokes (after all it was a time of big hair, leg warmers, and eyeliner for men), the ’80s produced a surplus of catchy pop tunes and numerous one-hit wonders; yet we can’t forget that the decade launched some very well respected musical acts – U2, INXS, Madonna, R.E.M., and Vancouver’s own Bryan Adams spring to mind – all that and it gave birth to the MTV generation…
We’ve compiled a list of 12 yoyomama favourites which, while not remotely cerebral, will have you waxing nostalgic for acid wash jeans, shoulder pads, and John Hughes’ films.
| Is There Something I Should Know? | Duran Duran (it’s all in the chorus folks!) |
| Never Gonna Give You Up | Rick Astley |
| Walking On Sunshine | Katrina and the Waves |
| Down Under | Men At Work |
| Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go | Wham! (ahh, the innocence of youth, before George came out of the closet) |
| Venus | Bananarama |
| Karma Cameleon | Culture Club (C-C-C-Camp, but fun) |
| I’m On My Way | The Proclaimers (nothing like a Scottish brogue!) |
| Our House | Madness |
| Video Killed The Radio Star | The Buggles |
| You Spin Me ‘Round | Dead or Alive (personally, we HATE this song, but kids LOVE the chorus!) |
| Whip It | Devo (easy peasy lyrics!) |
All songs are available on iTunes.

New today on our list of things to do around town that aren’t affected by the strike:
What about teaching your tot to ride a bike? If you don’t want to spring for the bike of moment, The Skutt Push Bike, Cheapskates has lots of inexpensive bikes and trikes. Once you’ve mastered your local sidewalk why not try a promenade at Jericho or Kits Beach. Make a morning of it, picnic and all.
And while we’ve mentioned Science World before, this is your last chance to catch their Grossology exhibit (it ends September 3rd). Billed as the Impolite Science of the Human Body, we know a few little folk who would find it fascinating (if they haven’t already).

There are so many 80′s tunes worth revisiting, I could go on and on. It’s a love-hate thing for me.
