Sign like a celebrity, baby
While it’s unlikely that your little one will be going on playdates with Shiloh Jolie-Pitt or Gwyneth Paltrow’s little Moses, there’s no reason your baby can’t sign just like a celebrity tot. Local entrepreneur Serena Lohan has created Canada’s first baby signing DVD. Mimic Me, is an instructional DVD that makes it easy and fun for parents to communicate with their little ones using American Sign Language.

Since it’s the last long weekend of summer (sigh!) and it’s supposed to nice at least part of the time, we thought we’d do something a little different this weekend and bring you events that involve going a little bit farther afield to help you see the summer (that sort of wasn’t) out with a bang! We’re taking you all the way to Cultus Lake and back.

As you know, here at yoyomama we believe that while children’s music has its place in your life, grown up music does too. But what about the radio? Before kids the radio was our own personal background music. We’re the first to admit that unless you get ‘em while they’re young, few little ones can tolerate the radio for very long, so what’s a mum to do if she wants a dose of arts & culture, or just plain old pop rock?
Snack attack
Well, our back to Preschool week may be over, but there’s still more to say, and today we wanted to talk packing healthy snacks for school. First a few more great tips from Daljit – the main thing is to know your child. If you’ve got a slow eater on your hands, give them one snack, not a large selection. Some kids eat complicated food, some kids don’t. To help your child feel successful, especially with their dietary habits, give them amounts you know they can finish. And pick snacks you know they like so they won’t be eyeing their neighbour’s food.
Music for the Masses (The ’80s)

We’ve brought you kid-appropriate adult music from the ’60s and the ’70s, and now we’re revisiting the 1980s and some guilty pleasures from a decade most of us remember well. Frequently the butt of jokes (after all it was a time of big hair, leg warmers, and eyeliner for men), the ’80s produced a surplus of catchy pop tunes and numerous one-hit wonders; yet we can’t forget that the decade launched some very well respected musical acts – U2, INXS, Madonna, R.E.M., and Vancouver’s own Bryan Adams spring to mind – all that and it gave birth to the MTV generation…
Wanted: one perfect preschool

Choosing a preschool for your child can be a stressful experience. Especially if it’s for your first-born, it can take on a disproportionate significance – as if their whole academic career and future happiness hangs on you making the “right” choice. You may even resort to stalking mothers of like aged children at the playground to interrogate them about their preschool. You know exactly what you are looking for…
What to do, what to do?

Summer’s not over yet, just look at what’s going on this weekend if you don’t believe us. You can float your boat, get super festive, celebrate one of Vancouver’s oldest communities, and break bread for a good cause. Plus Vancouver’s first H&M opens today…
Don’t react

Allergies are become more and more prevalent and so are the precautions schools are taking to keep kids safe. When preschool starts, make a point of finding out if your child’s school is a peanut-free zone or if they request certain other foods not be brought for snacks. Most preschools will collect a list during the first week of school of foods not to bring to school and circulate it. If your child’s school doesn’t do that, it’s worth asking that they start.

Let’s face it, the daily grind of thinking what to make for dinner, making sure you’ve got the ingredients, prepping it during nap time and then finding time to whip it up while entertaining your little ones can get just a little wearing (or relentless as one mama we know aptly puts it). And if [...]

Introducing books that focus on the school experience into your reading routine is a great springboard for discussing feelings and thoughts about “the big day”. Daljit recommends talking to your local librarian for ideas on the best books for your child as they’re not only up-to-date on new releases, but they also are a great resource for other issues your child may be dealing with. However, since those of us in Vancouver haven’t had our libraries available for awhile, we’ve done the legwork and talked to a children’s librarian for you to get ideas for good reads.
