Breathe right
Babies are born knowing how to breathe properly, but the stresses and pressures of growing up can make them forget. Why not get ‘em while they’re young, bendy and stretchy and keep them breathing right with yoga? New to Vancouver, Little Tree Yoga, offers a range of classes including YogaKids and Family Yoga.
Family Yoga classes help everyone in the family become more centered and calm, which sounds good to us. Plus it offers some fun bonding time. YogaKids, for three to 12-year-olds, helps kids learn how to focus, centre, relax and develop self-control, self-respect and respect for others. Plus pretending to be a dog, a snake and lion is just plain fun.
While the class didn’t resemble the calm and centered yoga we remembered from our prenatal days, the mix of language, art, games, music and story-telling offered something for each of our little yogis. Plus Lou Lynn, the brains behind Little Tree, took the kids, and all the challenges they offered, in stride. Children who’ve had early exposure to the world of sun salutations will probably take to yoga quicker than those who haven’t, but all the kids in the class we tried took something away from it, even if it was just the knowledge that yoga blocks make good stacking toys.
Intrigued by still not sure? Little Tree is offering Family Yoga class on the grass near Kits Beach on Sunday, August 26th. The 9:30 am – 10:30 am class will be followed by a picnic. All you need to bring is some water and some willing, all else will be provided. Hold your space by calling the Lululemon store on West 4th Avenue: 604.732.6111.
Little Tree classes are offered at Unity Yoga Teahouse and Studio (which is like a funky treehouse hidden just off Commercial Drive) in Vancouver, and Spa Yoga in Richmond. Find class times and more information at: www.littletreeyoga.com
New today on our list of things to do around town that aren’t affected by the strike:
We’ve had some requests for berry picking venues that are a little bit closer to home so we found this U Pick Blueberry Farm in Richmond that follows organic practices – No. 5 Blueberry Farm, plus here’s a list of all the u-picks across BC. It also includes great tips for canning, picking, freezing etc.
And here’s a link handily provided by CBC for where you can drop your garbage during the strike. Alas, it’ll mean a bit of a roadtrip.
Why not take a walk through the Camosun Bog? Almost fully restored, the bog is a little gem in Pacific Spirit Park and has entrances on 19th & 21st Ave. and has a stroller-friendly walkway that winds through the trees.
It’s almost time to choose a winner for our July contest. Anyone who signs up for yoyomama in July, or forwards yoyomama along to a friend using the forward feature at the bottom of each day’s email, will be entered to win a $200 gift certificate from Natural Pod. A great local online resource, Natural Pod offers natural items for your child’s play and everyday life, including wooden toys, natural dolls, and arts & crafts.
Know someone you think would enjoy yoyomama? Be sure to let them know about us before day’s end tomorrow to increase your odds of winning!

Thanks for the lovely article on yoga for kids and families. It really is a wonderful experience to practice yoga with the beautiful little spirits in your life. I’ve met the owners and family yoga instructor at Little Tree and she is absolutely born to teach yoga to kids. She’s quite amazing!
Blessings,
