What to do, what to do?
From now on our regular Thursday weekend guides will always have the same name, “What to do, What to do”. This will make them easy for you to find on the site when you’re looking ahead and planning some family fun-time. And, as of Tuesday, all these events are still on, despite the ongoing strikes.
19th Annual Illuminares Lantern Procession
Saturday, July 28th, Trout Lake at John Hendry Park, Victoria Drive & 15th Avenue, 7pm – 11 pm, procession at 9 pm
This is one magical evening event we feel it’s worth keeping our little ones up for, or maybe that’s just our excuse as we’re such big fans of this procession of lanterns with everything from the most basic to the most fantastical. Plus music, displays and the performances. And don’t get us started on the mini doughnuts…More details on their website: www.publicdreams.org
Chinatown Arts & Cultural Festival: Bringing the World to the Heart of Chinatown
Saturday, July 28th, Sun Yat-Sen Park Courtyard, 50 East Pender Street, 1 pm – 4 pm
This is the last of four Saturdays of diverse cultural fun and they’re wrapping it all up with a Latin American showcase. There’ll be live performances, music & dance, food tastings and kids’ crafts. More details on their website: www.vancouverchinatown.ca/events.html
Caribbean Days Parade and Festival
Saturday & Sunday, July 28th & 29th, Waterfront Park, North Vancouver
This is for all you North Vancouver mamas who’ve been agitating for more North Van action on yoyomama. This is BC’s largest annual cultural festival with parading, dining and dancing, and it looks as if it’ll even be sunny. There’s a special food area just for kids, a kids’ parade on Sunday, and lots of rocking tunes. More details on their website: www.caribbeandays.ca
Farmer’s Markets
All Vancouver’s Farmer’s Markets are good to go this weekend. More details on their website: www.eatlocal.org
Portobello West Fashion and Art Market
Sunday, July 29th, noon – 7pm, Rocky Mountaineer Station (1755 Cottrell St.)
For all you shopper mamas it’s Portabello Market time again. This month our eye has been caught by Shoo Foo’s Bamboo towels (it must be bamboo week here on yoyomama), cuddly, yet slightly creepy toys from Little Fiends, and Redfish Kids wear. More details on their site: www.portobellowest.com
New today on our list of things to do around town that aren’t affected by the strike:
- Quite by fortuitous chance yesterday we discovered that Granville Island’s water park is still up and running (and supervised).
- And have you tried mum and babe classes at Fit4Two yet? They’re offering new participants their first class for free (at all locations).
- What about gathering some mum friends together and creating your own play gym? Decide which of you has the best lawn (or garage if the weather’s inclement), bring your own push and pull toys, and snacks and/or lunch, and let your little ones roar around for a few hours. Make it easier on the hostess by packing out what you bring in, except for that bottle of wine you leave chilling in her fridge.
Use our comments section to share your plans and tips and tricks for a summer where some of the fun’s been cut short.
Don’t forget!
When you sign up for yoyomama in July you’ll be entered to win a $200 gift certificate from Natural Pod, which offers natural items for your child’s play and everyday life including wooden toys, and natural dolls. If you can’t make it to Portabello West, you can always shop online with Natural Pod.
And if you were already a subscriber before July don’t worry, we’re not leaving you out. Every time you use the forward feature at the bottom of your daily email to share yoyomama with your friends you’ll be entered into our contest too. The more you share, the more chances you have to win.
