Mocktail party

Summer cocktail season’s in full swing and somehow ordering yet another cranberry & soda just isn’t cutting it. For those of us who are abstaining because of gestating, lactating or too much celebrating there’s no reason to limit yourself to non-alcoholic standbys, instead, why not bust out a little with exotic mocktails?

One of our favourite things to do while dining out is to challenge the bartender to create something non-alcoholic and non-boring that pairs well with our meal, it’s always unexpected and interesting and often delicious. Sometimes we go for the comfort drink and order a Shirley Temple — it may have seemed elegant when you were five, but really it’s just gingerale, orange juice, grenadine with that all-important cherry on top.

We’re mums and we wear many hats, but unfortunately that of mixologist isn’t one of them. Rather than coming up with our own concoctions we like find our mocktail recipes online. Our current favourites come from Epicurious, when we’re feeling the heat we’re suckers for their Lavender Lemonade.

The best part? Mocktails make great indulgences during playdates, especially if you garnish them with fruit and umbrellas and straws. . .

Did you know you can share your favourite mocktail mixes on the site?

July’s big share: We’re modeling such good sharing that we can’t understand why our kids have so much trouble with it. When you sign up for yoyomama in July you’ll be entered to win a $200 gift certificate from Natural Pod, a great local online source for natural items that meet all your kid’s needs from teething to playtime.

Me too! Already a subscriber? Don’t worry, we’re not leaving you out. Every time you use the forward feature at the bottom of your daily email to share yoyomama with a friend, you’ll be entered in our contest too.

We’re currently coveting Natural Pod’s Beeswax Block Crayons, especially in light of our chew-everything toddler.
