C is for cookie

We’d like to be the type of mother who always brings nutritious snacks of cut up fruit and home made crackers on our outing, but alas, we don’t always live up to our own expectations. But we do try and assuage our guilt by making sure that our grab-and-go snacks offer some nutritional goodness, or at least don’t offer trans-fats. That’s why we were delighted to find a new line of snacks from Earth’s Best Organic featuring perennial favourite Sesame Street characters Cookie Monster, Big Bird and Elmo.

Breathe right

Babies are born knowing how to breathe properly, but the stresses and pressures of growing up can make them forget. Why not get ‘em while they’re young, bendy and stretchy and keep them breathing right with yoga? New to Vancouver, Little Tree Yoga, offers a range of classes including YogaKids and Family Yoga. Family Yoga classes help everyone in the family become more centered and calm. YogaKids helps kids learn how to focus, centre, relax and develop self-control, self-respect and respect for others

Come on, get sleepier

We didn’t want to tire you out completely with our list of bedtime-specific children’s books, so we kept a few in reserve for you to add to your child’s sleepytime collection. We’ve got a book with fairies, a gentle seaside book and book with a gorilla, pretty much something for everyone’s bedtime needs. We’ve also added a few more ideas for things to do while the strike continues.

What to do, what to do?

From now on our regular Thursday weekend guides will always have the same name, “What to do, What to do”. This will make them easy for you to find on the site when you’re looking ahead and planning some family fun-time. And, as of Tuesday, all these events are still on, despite the ongoing strikes. We’ve got lanterns, Latin, a great big party, and (of course) some shopping. . .

Mamas rock: Bamboobino

Filed Under Mamas Rock | July 25, 2007

One of the best things about starting yoyomama has been the great mums we meet who are doing all sorts of interesting things. We thought you’d like to meet them too. Once a month we’ll be highlighting a local entrepreneurial mama. She doesn’t necessarily have to be running a kid-friendly enterprise, just running her own business and juggling all the things that come with that. This month we wanted to let you know about Sharon Chai, who launched Bamboobino this past May and is already up to her ears in orders.

We interrupt our regular programming. . .

You and your kids are bouncing off the walls after all the rain, day camps are cancelled and play gyms and pools are closed. What’s a mama to do? We’ve undertaken the creation of a list of things to do with your under-fives that aren’t affected by the strike.

Plastic’s not fantastic

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff, Tips & Tricks | July 23, 2007

Sometimes it seems a miracle that those of us born in the sixties and seventies made it through our childhoods safely – after all many of us weren’t breastfed, there were no carseats, and we ate neon-orange mac ‘n cheese instead of organic bunny pasta. These days a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Take plastic for example. Studies are showing that plastic can leach the toxin Bisphenol-A, which is linked to birth defects, miscarriage and prostate cancer. Other studies question the leaching studies, so how’s a mama supposed to know what to do?

Come on get sleepy

When it comes to bedtime stories, you may (as we’ve been known to do) just grab whatever at hand, whether it’s bedtime-related or not. However, if you’re looking for true nighttime fare that may have a more powerful soothing effect on your savage little beasts we have some great finds for you.

Waiting for the weekend

What’s going on around town this weekend? Lots, that’s what! If you think that an event with Heineken in the title isn’t kid friendly, then you’ll think again at the 2007 Heineken Yaletown Street Party. If you love Canada’s Parks then the 21st is the day to celebrate. And if you didn’t make it to the first Commercial Drive Car-Free Festival, you’ll get a second chance this weekend.

Carbon dating

If this summer weather hasn’t convinced you that the climate’s changing, than nothing will. And summer holidays bring summer travel and summer travel whether by plane or car burns fuel, but surely you can’t be expected to remain homebound just to limit the size of your carbon footprint? We’ve got some great ways to neutralize some of that green guilt you’re feeling.
