Culture vulture

This week was the launch of the Monet to Dali show at the Vancouver Art Gallery showcasing famous works by Manet, Monet, Cézanne, van Gogh, Rodin, Picasso, and Dalí. We’re thinking this is art your kids might enjoy too, but how exactly do you visit a museum with tots in tow and make it enjoyable for all, including other patrons? We’ve culled some ideas from the websites of world-renowned museums.

Out and about

There’s so much on offer when it’s summer in the city. Here are some to dos that caught our eye for the upcoming weekend – The Main Street Fair, the Car-Free Commercial Drive Festival, and a very tempting sample sale.

Drool tested and approved

For those of us who have been blessed with an overactive drooler, the hunt for a bib that rocks the drool is always on. One of our favourite droolworthy finds is Built NY’s Comfy Bib, which is made from neoprene with a waterproof inner layer that keeps the bib (and thus baby’s shirt) from turning into a soggy, mangled mess. In fact, we’ve found it almost seemed to wick the moisture away.

Books for babes – Part I

If you’re like us and you find few things more enjoyable than snuggling up with your baby to peruse a book together, than read on. It’s hard to narrow down a handful of favourites from all the great books out there for babies, but here are some that we think hit the spot for sharing with your youngest loves, ages zero to two.

Oh. . .Daddio!

What to do, what to do?

Summer is a wonderful time to get out and about, exploring new neighborhoods, meeting new neighbors in your own ‘hood, and generally just discovering more about Vancouver.

This Saturday is summer (free) fun fair time with family-oriented events in Cedar Cottage, and Killarney, plus some over-the-top kite flying and a great bookish (indoor) event for slightly older kids.

Walk this way

You had visions of your little one dozing an hour away on the sidelines while you got a workout in, but alas, the reality is that your tiny tot’s routine doesn’t mesh with the timing of your postnatal pilates class, or anything else on offer for that matter. A new device called the Strollometer — it’s like a pedometer for strollers – can turn your daily stroll into a workout by keeping track of all the miles you log pushing junior in the stroller at Granville Island, in Superstore or cruising up Main Street.

To market, to market

Today is the first day of the weekly Wednesday Riley Park Farmer’s Market. Farmer’s markets are great places to stock up on everything from local produce to baked goods to cheese and dairy. They’re also an entertaining way to introduce your kids to the fact that food doesn’t originate at the grocery store.

Gettin’ Siggy wit it

Filed Under Going Green, Stuff | June 5, 2007

Bottled water’s being attacked for its less-than-green properties and while we’re up for drinking filtered tap water we really do need an easy — and dry — way to tote it around when we’ve got our tots in tow. Enter Sigg bottles from Switzerland! They’re unbreakable, leak-proof and if and when they require replacement they’re fully recyclable. Plus they look cool.

SO in the know!

Welcome to yoyomama’s inaugural email. And because we promised we wouldn’t let community centre registration time pass you by again, never let it be said we don’t live up to our word – so here’s your first heads up from us — it’s that time again! A few community centres started registration in March, but for the majority across the city you can register on June 4th or 5th.
