The Monkees

We all know that kids love music (and worse, repetition) but what are doting parents to do when junior wants to listen to cloying kid’s music ad nauseum? This can be particularly excruciating when trapped in the confines of the family auto — how can you keep your sanity and your little one happy as well as trying to keep the car on the road?

In an effort to relieve the mind-numbing tedium of your child’s favourite tunes (which may have had some appeal the first ten times you heard them, but we’re guessing they’re starting to grate on your nerves now) we’re exploring adult music that has kid appeal (and is relatively PG). This week we’ve got a list of tunes from the ’60s that will have you and your musically inclined progeny singing along in unison, if not in key. Perfect for upcoming summer roadtrips:

Come On Get Happy — Partridge Family
Monkees’ Theme — The Monkees
Satisfaction –The Rolling Stones
You Really Got Me — The Kinks
Born to Be Wild – Steppenwolf
I Get Around — Beach Boys
Sugar, Sugar — The Archies
Baby Love — The Supremes
I Got U Babe — Sonny & Cher
Our House — Crosby, Stills & Nash
Yellow Submarine –The Beatles
Mrs. Robinson — Simon & Garfunkel

All music (except for Yellow Submarine) is available on iTunes. Next Friday we’ll be airing our ’70s family-friendly play list.

Today we’re happy to introduce a new yoyomama correspondent, Pamela Francis. Pamela is a music maven and devoted aunt of four, who makes it her mission to introduce her nieces and nephew to the wider world of music.
