Gettin’ Siggy wit it

Bottled water’s being attacked for its less-than-green properties and while we’re up for drinking filtered tap water we really do need an easy – and dry – way to tote it around when we’ve got our tots in tow.

Enter Sigg bottles from Switzerland! They’ve got a non-toxic, baked-on inner lining that prevents taste transfer (which means chocolate milk tastes like chocolate milk, lemonade tastes like lemonade, and water always tastes like, well, you get the picture…), they’re unbreakable, leak-proof and if and when they require replacement they’re fully recyclable. Plus they look cool. The kid-versions appeal with great colours and graphics, while the adult versions are a little more sophisticated.

We’ve had a grown up one for years and while it’s a bit dented and dinged, it still works like a charm, and we recently invested in some pop-arty ones for our kids, and now they’re converts too.

Clocking in at over $20 they’re not cheap. But just think how many fewer juice boxes and drippy sippy cups you’ll need, buying one is like short term pain for long-term green gain!

We got ours at Crocodile on 4th Avenue: www.crocodilebaby.com, and we’ve also seen them at Whole Foods: www.wholefoods.com.

We also just got Sigg bottles for our two kids and they love them! We’re trying to reduce our plastic use so I was quite pleased when we found these at Crocodile. I noticed recently that Roots Kids on Robson Street also carries the Sigg bottles – they have a cute Thomas the Tank Engine one, if that’s what your kid is into!

Like most of us these days, I am trying to reduce our waste (and there seems so much of it with young children) and am concerned about what possible toxins my family may be ingesting. To this end, I think these Sigg bottles offer a wonderful alternative to plastic. My question is, where is the literature about the dangers of plastic out there? Who’s writing it? Who’s vetting that information? Everyone’s talking about it but I just wonder who’s doing the research.

Here are a few articles I’ve found from seemingly reliable sources on the dangers of plastic water bottles:

    http://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/200311/lol5.asp
    http://www.boingboing.net/2005/04/05/are_reusable_water_b.html
    http://www.idealbite.com/tiplibrary/archives/bottled_up/

You’re right though, some cite the studies (ie. the Sierra Club and the boingboing site) but some just say studies show…

    And some detractors:

    http://www.acsh.org/factsfears/newsID.92/news_detail.asp
    http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/petbottles.asp

It looks like choosing it for reducing waste over plastic degrading and causing cancer is a more informed choice. And at least water that’s been sitting in your Sigg bottle doesn’t have the yucky plastic taste that water that’s been sitting in a plastic bottle in the car has.

[...] Some of our favourite plastic-free drinking products for our littlest ones are glass bottles from BornFreeâ„¢, and they also makes plastic bottles that are Bisphenol-A Free. I just discovered the Sigg bottles. The Vespa store on 4th has a great selection. When others were sold out, they still had a lot to choose from. Love them!!! The Vespas are very pretty also, almost decided to go green all the way and buy one. Who knows, that may be next.

I think its about time we reduced our usage of plastic. Plastic is made from oil. So this would reduce our energy burden too. I got my bottle from http://www.metalwaterbottlestore.com

Does anyone know if any of these stainless steel sippy cups come with handles? I have been searching and cannot find one with handles.
