Everywhere Babies

It’s been hard work, but continuing with last week’s column, we have finally managed to narrow down our list of favourite board books for young babes. These make great additions to your baby’s bookshelf and are also handy to keep in mind if you need a gift for a newborn. Besides, it’s always good to have a valid excuse to visit Vancouver Kidsbooks:

I kissed the baby! By Mary Murphy
Black-and-white illustrations are perfect for the youngest readers, who prefer uncluttered high-contrast pictures. The wonder of this book is the sense of joy and excitement that a whole community of animals feels towards a well-loved little duckling. The book ends with Mama Duck enthusiastically kissing her little one. A certain baby we know always offers up his face for a kiss at the end of this story. Adorable in more ways that one!

Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers, illustrated by Marla Frazee
Poignant but not cloyingly sentimental. The text starts off, “Every day, everywhere babies are born” with an illustration of ten multi-ethnic babies, in various states of sleep, squalling, calm or shock. Throughout the babies are rocked, kissed, dressed, and loved in a variety of settings by a whole cast of friends and relations. The book culminates with a baby’s first birthday party. Although young ones enjoy this book too, we love to give it as a first birthday gift as a lovely reminder of all the emotions and milestones of a baby’s first year.
