Music for the Masses (the ’70s)
You’ve just dropped your kids off. You’re alone in the car. And then half an hour of driving later you realize that instead of taking the opportunity to listen to your own music, you’ve been mindlessly humming along to theirs. Argh! With this collection of hip, roadworthy tunes from the ’70s that the whole family [...]

How are you going to celebrate the 140th Birthday of our country this weekend? There’s always the mother of all Canada Day celebrations, Canada Day at Canada Place where there’s truly something for everyone, but there’s also lots more going on around town. You could swim for free in Mount Pleasant, go green on Locarno Beach or bust out at Granville Island…
Got to go

A restaurant doesn’t have to be billed as family-friendly to actually be family-friendly. That’s what a group of local mums found when they started to haunt the Sylvia Hotel’s restaurant with their newborn babes. The location lends itself to a stroll on the seawall with tots in tow, and then a meal watching the west-end world go by. Plus the hotel’s character and hint of old-world (as opposed to ye olde worlde) charm takes you back to the days when the Sylvia daringly opened Vancouver’s first cocktail bar.
The skin you’re in
You probably anoint your baby’s skin with lotions and potions that tend toward the natural and organic. But what about your skin? Doesn’t it deserve the same tender loving care? Up to 60% of what we put on our skins is absorbed into our bodies, so it makes sense to avoid unnecessary chemicals and additives and opt for organic for yourself as well.

Someday soon we’ll see the summer sun and when that day comes you’re going to want to take full advantage of it and make one of our Water and Spray parks your destination du jour. Here’s a full listing of parks where you can splish and splash – some are already up and running and many more are opening soon so we’ve included a link at the end of the list so you can check all the details for your park of choice.
Music for the masses (the ’60s)

We all know that kids love music (and worse, repetition) but what are doting parents to do when junior wants to listen to cloying kid’s music ad nauseum? This can be particularly excruciating when trapped in the confines of the family auto — how can you keep your sanity and your little one happy as well as trying to keep the car on the road? In an effort to relieve the mind-numbing tedium of your child’s favourite tunes we’re exploring adult music that has kid appeal (and is relatively PG).
Go West (if you’re not already there)

The West side of the city will be hopping with fairs, farms and fun this weekend. There’s three days of the Point Grey Fiesta. Then there’s the opening of the UBC Farm Market, which makes eating locally easy as they grow everything from artichokes to zucchini. And finally Portabello West, where there’s truly something for everyone from tiny babes, to their accessory-loving mamas.
Spread it

Here at yoyomama we’re suckers for packaging, so during a recent excursion to the grocery store our eye was caught by Gouash. It’s an all-natural fruit spread packaged like a tube of paint. Mums will be swayed by the fact that it has no added food colouring or preservatives. Your kids will be won over by the idea of “painting” their toast. And for $3.99 per tube why not buy all three flavours (Blueberry, Apple & Strawberry) and let your budding Picasso loose at the breakfast table?
Books for babes – Part II
It’s been hard work, but continuing with last week’s column, we have finally managed to narrow down our list of favourite board books for young babes. These make great additions to your baby’s bookshelf and are also handy to keep in mind if you need a gift for a newborn. Besides, it’s always good to have a valid excuse to visit Vancouver Kidsbooks.

A new parent-friendly café opened a few weeks ago off Commercial Drive on Charles Street, and it’s made us realize the difference between child-friendly and parent-friendly. Child-friendly is all about crayons and chicken strips, parent-friendly is all about a great play area stocked with (clean) toys and books, a reasonably priced menu focusing on local and organic fare, a clean baby changing area, and bambinicinnos.
